Half-Life 2 bilimkurgu tarzında, birinci kişi gözüyle oynanan bir bilgisayar oyunudur. Valve Software'ın çıkarmış olduğu oyun Half-Life'ın devamı niteliğindedir. 2006 da yılın oyunu seçilmiştir.
İlk oyunda olduğu gibi yine bu oyunda da Gordon Freeman adlı bilim adamını yönetiyoruz. Oyunun büyük bir kısmı Doğu Avrupa'da bir yerde olduğu varsayılan Şehir-17'de geçiyor. Hikaye, ilk oyundan yaklaşık 20 sene sonrasını konu almaktadır. Bu 20 sene içerisinde işgalci uzaylı ırk olan Combine imparatorluğu ilk oyunda gelişen olaylar neticesinde dünyayı ele geçirmiş ve insanları köleleştirmiştir. Oyun Valve Software'ın kendi geliştirmiş olduğu Source Engine adlı bir grafik motorunu kullanmaktadır. Ayrıca Havok fizik motoru ile, bilgisayar oyunlarındaki gerçeğe yakın fizik yakalanmıştır.
